Peter's Vision

(Leviticus 11:1-47; Deuteronomy 14:1-21)

9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.9The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.9On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.9On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:9The next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop about noon.
10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance.10And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance10But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance;10And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,10Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something, he went into a visionary state.
11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners.11and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth.11and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground,11And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:11He saw heaven opened and an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth.
12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles and birds.12In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air.12and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.12Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.12In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky.

13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."13And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”13A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!"13And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.13Then a voice said to him, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat!""
14"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."14But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.”14But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean."14But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.14No, Lord!" Peter said. "For I have never eaten anything common and ritually unclean!"
15The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."15And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.”15Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy."15And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.15Again, a second time, a voice said to him, "What God has made clean, you must not call common."
16This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.16This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.16This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky.16This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.16This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into heaven.

Peter Summoned to Caesarea

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
17While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon's house was and stopped at the gate.17Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon’s house, stood at the gate17Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon's house, appeared at the gate;17Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,17While Peter was deeply perplexed about what the vision he had seen might mean, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions to Simon's house, stood at the gate.
18They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there.18and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there.18and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there.18And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.18They called out, asking if Simon, who was also named Peter, was lodging there.
19While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Simon, three men are looking for you.19And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you.19While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you.19While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.19While Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit told him, "Three men are here looking for you.
20So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."20Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them.”20"But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself."20Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.20Get up, go downstairs, and accompany them with no doubts at all, because I have sent them."
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
21Peter went down and said to the men, "I'm the one you're looking for. Why have you come?"21And Peter went down to the men and said, “I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming?”21Peter went down to the men and said, "Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?"21Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?21Then Peter went down to the men and said, "Here I am, the one you're looking for. What is the reason you're here?"
22The men replied, "We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say."22And they said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say.”22They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you."22And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.22They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you."
23Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the believers from Joppa went along.23So he invited them in to be his guests. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.23So he invited them in and gave them lodging. And on the next day he got up and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.23Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.23Peter then invited them in and gave them lodging. The next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went with him.

Peter at Caesarea

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
24The following day he arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.24And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.24On the following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.24And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.24The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
25As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence.25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell at his feet and worshiped him.25And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.25When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.
26But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself."26But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.”26But Peter raised him up, saying, "Stand up; I too am just a man."26But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.26But Peter helped him up and said, "Stand up! I myself am also a man."
27While talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people.27And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered.27As he talked with him, he entered and found many people assembled.27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.27While talking with him, he went on in and found that many had come together there.

28He said to them: "You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean.28And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean.28And he said to them, "You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.28Peter said to them, "You know it's forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner. But God has shown me that I must not call any person common or unclean.
29So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me?"29So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”29"That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. So I ask for what reason you have sent for me."29Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?29That's why I came without any objection when I was sent for. So I ask: Why did you send for me?"
30Cornelius answered: "Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me30And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing30Cornelius said, "Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during the ninth hour; and behold, a man stood before me in shining garments,30And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,30Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this hour, at three in the afternoon, I was praying in my house. Just then a man in a dazzling robe stood before me
31and said, 'Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor.31and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.31and he said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God.31And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.31and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your acts of charity have been remembered in God's sight.
32Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.'32Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’32Therefore send to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you; he is staying at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.'32Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.32Therefore send someone to Joppa and invite Simon here, who is also named Peter. He is lodging in Simon the tanner's house by the sea.'
33So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us."33So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”33"So I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord."33Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.33Therefore I immediately sent for you, and you did the right thing in coming. So we are all present before God, to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord."

34Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism34So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality,34Opening his mouth, Peter said: "I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality,34Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:34Then Peter began to speak: "Now I really understand that God doesn't show favoritism,
35but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.35but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.35But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.35but in every nation the person who fears Him and does righteousness is acceptable to Him.
36You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.36As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all),36"The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)--36The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)36He sent the message to the Israelites, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ--He is Lord of all.

38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.38"You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the Devil, because God was with Him.
39"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,39And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree,39"We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross.39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:39We ourselves are witnesses of everything He did in both the Judean country and in Jerusalem, yet they killed Him by hanging Him on a tree.
40but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.40but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear,40"God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible,40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;40God raised up this man on the third day and permitted Him to be seen,
41He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.41not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.41not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.41not by all the people, but by us, witnesses appointed beforehand by God, who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead.
42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.42And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead.42"And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.42And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.42He commanded us to preach to the people and to solemnly testify that He is the One appointed by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead.
43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."43To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”43"Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins."43To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.43All the prophets testify about Him that through His name everyone who believes in Him will receive forgiveness of sins."

The Gentiles Receive the Holy Spirit

(Joel 2:28-32; John 14:15-26; John 16:5-16; Acts 2:1-13; Acts 19:1-7)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.44While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message.44While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message.
45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.45And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.45All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.45And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.
46For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,46For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,46For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,46For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,46For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded, "
47"Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."47“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”47"Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?"47Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?47Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"
48So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.48And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for a few days.
