Nations Left to Test Israel

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
These are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan1Now these are the nations that the LORD left, to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had not experienced all the wars in Canaan.1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them (that is, all who had not experienced any of the wars of Canaan;1Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;1These are the nations the LORD left in order to test Israel, since the Israelites had fought none of these in any of the wars with Canaan.
(he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience):2It was only in order that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, to teach war to those who had not known it before.2only in order that the generations of the sons of Israel might be taught war, those who had not experienced it formerly).2Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;2This was to teach the future generations of the Israelites how to fight in battle, especially those who had not fought before.
the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath.3These are the nations: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.3These nations are: the five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites who lived in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal-hermon as far as Lebo-hamath.3Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.3These nations included: the five rulers of the Philistines and all of the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanese mountains from Mount Baal-hermon as far as the entrance to Hamath.
They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the LORD's commands, which he had given their ancestors through Moses.4They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.4They were for testing Israel, to find out if they would obey the commandments of the LORD, which He had commanded their fathers through Moses.4And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.4The LORD left them to test Israel, to determine if they would keep the LORD's commands He had given their fathers through Moses.

The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.5So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.5The sons of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites;5And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:5But they settled among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
They took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.6And their daughters they took to themselves for wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.6and they took their daughters for themselves as wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.6And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.6The Israelites took their daughters as wives for themselves, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

Othniel

The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs.7And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.7The sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth.7And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.7The Israelites did what was evil in the LORD's sight; they forgot the LORD their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.
The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years.8Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.8Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, so that He sold them into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the sons of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.8Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.8The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and He sold them to Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram-naharaim, and the Israelites served him eight years.
But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them.9But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.9When the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the sons of Israel to deliver them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.9And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.9The Israelites cried out to the LORD. So the LORD raised up Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's youngest brother, as a deliverer to save the Israelites.
The Spirit of the LORD came on him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.10The Spirit of the LORD was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.10The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel. When he went out to war, the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, so that he prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.10And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.10The Spirit of the LORD came on him, and he judged Israel. Othniel went out to battle, and the LORD handed over Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram to him, so that Othniel overpowered him.
So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.11So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.11Then the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.11And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.11Then the land was peaceful 40 years, and Othniel son of Kenaz died.

Ehud Delivers the Israelites

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel.12And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done what was evil in the sight of the LORD.12Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.12And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.12The Israelites again did what was evil in the LORD's sight. He gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because they had done what was evil in the LORD's sight.
Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.13He gathered to himself the Ammonites and the Amalekites, and went and defeated Israel. And they took possession of the city of palms.13And he gathered to himself the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and defeated Israel, and they possessed the city of the palm trees.13And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.13After Eglon convinced the Ammonites and the Amalekites to join forces with him, he attacked and defeated Israel and took possession of the City of Palms.
The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.14And the people of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.14The sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.14So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.14The Israelites served Eglon king of Moab 18 years.
Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer--Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.15Then the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, and the LORD raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.15But when the sons of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for them, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. And the sons of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.15But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.15Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of Gera, a left-handed Benjaminite, as a deliverer for them. The Israelites sent him to Eglon king of Moab with tribute money.

Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a cubit long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.16And Ehud made for himself a sword with two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his clothes.16Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length, and he bound it on his right thigh under his cloak.16But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.16Ehud made himself a double-edged sword 18 inches long. He strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes
He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man.17And he presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.17He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.17And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.17and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was an extremely fat man.
After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way those who had carried it.18And when Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.18It came about when he had finished presenting the tribute, that he sent away the people who had carried the tribute.18And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.18When Ehud had finished presenting the tribute, he dismissed the people who had carried it.
But on reaching the stone images near Gilgal he himself went back to Eglon and said, "Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you." The king said to his attendants, "Leave us!" And they all left.19But he himself turned back at the idols near Gilgal and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” And he commanded, “Silence.” And all his attendants went out from his presence.19But he himself turned back from the idols which were at Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." And he said, "Keep silence." And all who attended him left him.19But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.19At the carved images near Gilgal he returned and said, "King Eglon, I have a secret message for you." The king called for silence, and all his attendants left him.
Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his palace and said, "I have a message from God for you." As the king rose from his seat,20And Ehud came to him as he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, “I have a message from God for you.” And he arose from his seat.20Ehud came to him while he was sitting alone in his cool roof chamber. And Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." And he arose from his seat.20And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.20Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in his room upstairs where it was cool. Ehud said, "I have a word from God for you," and the king stood up from his throne.

Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king's belly.21And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly.21Ehud stretched out his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly.21And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:21Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and plunged it into Eglon's belly.
Even the handle sank in after the blade, and his bowels discharged. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it.22And the hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not pull the sword out of his belly; and the dung came out.22The handle also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the sword out of his belly; and the refuse came out.22And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.22Even the handle went in after the blade, and Eglon's fat closed in over it, so that Ehud did not withdraw the sword from his belly. And Eglon's insides came out.
Then Ehud went out to the porch; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them.23Then Ehud went out into the porch and closed the doors of the roof chamber behind him and locked them.23Then Ehud went out into the vestibule and shut the doors of the roof chamber behind him, and locked them.23Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.23Ehud escaped by way of the porch, closing and locking the doors of the upstairs room behind him.
After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the palace."24When he had gone, the servants came, and when they saw that the doors of the roof chamber were locked, they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the closet of the cool chamber.”24When he had gone out, his servants came and looked, and behold, the doors of the roof chamber were locked; and they said, "He is only relieving himself in the cool room."24When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.24Ehud was gone when Eglon's servants came in. They looked and found the doors of the upstairs room locked and thought he was relieving himself in the cool room.
They waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead.25And they waited till they were embarrassed. But when he still did not open the doors of the roof chamber, they took the key and opened them, and there lay their lord dead on the floor.25They waited until they became anxious; but behold, he did not open the doors of the roof chamber. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their master had fallen to the floor dead.25And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.25The servants waited until they became worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upstairs room. So they took the key and opened the doors--and there was their lord lying dead on the floor!

While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the stone images and escaped to Seirah.26Ehud escaped while they delayed, and he passed beyond the idols and escaped to Seirah.26Now Ehud escaped while they were delaying, and he passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.26And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.26Ehud escaped while the servants waited. He crossed over the Jordan near the carved images and reached Seirah.
When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.27When he arrived, he sounded the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was their leader.27It came about when he had arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he was in front of them.27And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.27After he arrived, he sounded the ram's horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hill country, and he became their leader.
"Follow me," he ordered, "for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands." So they followed him down and took possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab; they allowed no one to cross over.28And he said to them, “Follow after me, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites and did not allow anyone to pass over.28He said to them, "Pursue them, for the LORD has given your enemies the Moabites into your hands." So they went down after him and seized the fords of the Jordan opposite Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross.28And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.28He told them, "Follow me, because the LORD has handed over your enemies, the Moabites, to you." So they followed him, captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over.
At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one escaped.29And they killed at that time about 10,000 of the Moabites, all strong, able-bodied men; not a man escaped.29They struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all robust and valiant men; and no one escaped.29And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.29At that time they struck down about 10,000 Moabites, all strong and able-bodied men. Not one of them escaped.
That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years.30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years.30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land was undisturbed for eighty years.30So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.30Moab became subject to Israel that day, and the land was peaceful 80 years.

Shamgar

After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel.31After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.31After him came Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad; and he also saved Israel.31And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.31After Ehud, Shamgar son of Anath became judge. He delivered Israel by striking down 600 Philistines with an oxgoad.
