The Law of Atonement

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
1The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they approached the LORD.1The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD and died,1Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they had approached the presence of the LORD and died.1And the LORD spake unto Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the LORD, and died;1The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of two of Aaron's sons when they approached the presence of the LORD and died.
2The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the cloud over the atonement cover.2and the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.2The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, or he will die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.2And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.2The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he may not come whenever he wants into the holy place behind the veil in front of the mercy seat on the ark or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud above the mercy seat."
3"This is how Aaron is to enter the Most Holy Place: He must first bring a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.3But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.3"Aaron shall enter the holy place with this: with a bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.3Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.3Aaron is to enter the most holy place in this way: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
4He is to put on the sacred linen tunic, with linen undergarments next to his body; he is to tie the linen sash around him and put on the linen turban. These are sacred garments; so he must bathe himself with water before he puts them on.4He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.4"He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and the linen undergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be girded with the linen sash and attired with the linen turban (these are holy garments). Then he shall bathe his body in water and put them on.4He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.4He is to wear a holy linen tunic, and linen undergarments are to be on his body. He must tie a linen sash around him and wrap his head with a linen turban. These are holy garments; he must bathe his body with water before he wears them.

5From the Israelite community he is to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.5And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.5"He shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.5And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.5He is to take from the Israelite community two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering."
6"Aaron is to offer the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household.6“Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house.6"Then Aaron shall offer the bull for the sin offering which is for himself, that he may make atonement for himself and for his household.6And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house.6Aaron will present the bull for his sin offering and make atonement for himself and his household.
7Then he is to take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting.7Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the LORD at the entrance of the tent of meeting.7"He shall take the two goats and present them before the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting.7And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.7Next he will take the two goats and place them before the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
8He is to cast lots for the two goats--one lot for the LORD and the other for the scapegoat.8And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for Azazel.8"Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other lot for the scapegoat.8And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.8After Aaron casts lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other for azazel,
9Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD and sacrifice it for a sin offering.9And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD and use it as a sin offering,9"Then Aaron shall offer the goat on which the lot for the LORD fell, and make it a sin offering.9And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.9he is to present the goat chosen by lot for the LORD and sacrifice it as a sin offering.
10But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to be used for making atonement by sending it into the wilderness as a scapegoat.10but the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the wilderness to Azazel.10"But the goat on which the lot for the scapegoat fell shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement upon it, to send it into the wilderness as the scapegoat.10But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.10But the goat chosen by lot for azazel is to be presented alive before the LORD to make purification with it by sending it into the wilderness for azazel."

The Sin Offering for the Priest

(Leviticus 8:14-17)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
11"Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering.11“Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself.11"Then Aaron shall offer the bull of the sin offering which is for himself and make atonement for himself and for his household, and he shall slaughter the bull of the sin offering which is for himself.11And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:11When Aaron presents the bull for his sin offering and makes atonement for himself and his household, he will slaughter the bull for his sin offering.
12He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain.12And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil12"He shall take a firepan full of coals of fire from upon the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground sweet incense, and bring it inside the veil.12And he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:12Then he must take a firepan full of fiery coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense, and bring them inside the veil.
13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die.13and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die.13"He shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the ark of the testimony, otherwise he will die.13And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, so that the cloud of incense covers the mercy seat that is over the testimony, or else he will die.
14He is to take some of the bull's blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.14And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.14"Moreover, he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; also in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.14And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.14He is to take some of the bull's blood and sprinkle it with his finger against the east side of the mercy seat; then he will sprinkle some of the blood with his finger before the mercy seat seven times."

The Sin Offering for the People

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
15"He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull's blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.15“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, sprinkling it over the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.15"Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in front of the mercy seat.15Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:15When he slaughters the male goat for the people's sin offering and brings its blood inside the veil, he must do the same with its blood as he did with the bull's blood: he is to sprinkle it against the mercy seat and in front of it.
16In this way he will make atonement for the Most Holy Place because of the uncleanness and rebellion of the Israelites, whatever their sins have been. He is to do the same for the tent of meeting, which is among them in the midst of their uncleanness.16Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.16"He shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel and because of their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and thus he shall do for the tent of meeting which abides with them in the midst of their impurities.16And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.16He will purify the most holy place in this way for all their sins because of the Israelites' impurities and rebellious acts. He will do the same for the tent of meeting that remains among them, because it is surrounded by their impurities.
17No one is to be in the tent of meeting from the time Aaron goes in to make atonement in the Most Holy Place until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, his household and the whole community of Israel.17No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel.17"When he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, no one shall be in the tent of meeting until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself and for his household and for all the assembly of Israel.17And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.17No one may be in the tent of meeting from the time he enters to make atonement in the most holy place until he leaves after he has made atonement for himself, his household, and the whole assembly of Israel.
18"Then he shall come out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He shall take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on all the horns of the altar.18Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around.18"Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar on all sides.18And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.18Then he will go out to the altar that is before the LORD and make atonement for it. He is to take some of the bull's blood and some of the goat's blood and put it on the horns on all sides of the altar.
19He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse it and to consecrate it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.19And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.19"With his finger he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it seven times and cleanse it, and from the impurities of the sons of Israel consecrate it.19And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.19He is to sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times to cleanse and set it apart from the Israelites' impurities."

The Scapegoat

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
20"When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat.20“And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat.20"When he finishes atoning for the holy place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall offer the live goat.20And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:20When he has finished purifying the most holy place, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he is to present the live male goat.
21He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites--all their sins--and put them on the goat's head. He shall send the goat away into the wilderness in the care of someone appointed for the task.21And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.21"Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and he shall lay them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who stands in readiness.21And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:21Aaron will lay both his hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the Israelites' wrongdoings and rebellious acts--all their sins. He is to put them on the goat's head and send it away into the wilderness by the man appointed for the task.
22The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a remote place; and the man shall release it in the wilderness.22The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness.22"The goat shall bear on itself all their iniquities to a solitary land; and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.22And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.22The goat will carry on it all their wrongdoings into a desolate land, and he will release it there."
23"Then Aaron is to go into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments he put on before he entered the Most Holy Place, and he is to leave them there.23“Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and shall take off the linen garments that he put on when he went into the Holy Place and shall leave them there.23"Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there.23And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there:23Then Aaron is to enter the tent of meeting, take off the linen garments he wore when he entered the most holy place, and leave them there.
NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
24He shall bathe himself with water in the sanctuary area and put on his regular garments. Then he shall come out and sacrifice the burnt offering for himself and the burnt offering for the people, to make atonement for himself and for the people.24And he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his garments and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people.24"He shall bathe his body with water in a holy place and put on his clothes, and come forth and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people.24And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people.24He will bathe his body with water in a holy place and put on his clothes. Then he must go out and sacrifice his burnt offering and the people's burnt offering; he will make atonement for himself and for the people.
25He shall also burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.25And the fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar.25"Then he shall offer up in smoke the fat of the sin offering on the altar.25And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.25He is to burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.
26"The man who releases the goat as a scapegoat must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp.26And he who lets the goat go to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.26"The one who released the goat as the scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his body with water; then afterward he shall come into the camp.26And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp.26The man who released the goat for azazel is to wash his clothes and bathe his body with water; afterward he may reenter the camp.
27The bull and the goat for the sin offerings, whose blood was brought into the Most Holy Place to make atonement, must be taken outside the camp; their hides, flesh and intestines are to be burned up.27And the bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried outside the camp. Their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be burned up with fire.27"But the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be taken outside the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire.27And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.27The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought into the most holy place to make atonement, must be brought outside the camp and their hide, flesh, and dung burned up.
28The man who burns them must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may come into the camp.28And he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.28"Then the one who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body with water, then afterward he shall come into the camp.28And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.28The one who burns them is to wash his clothes and bathe himself with water; afterward he may reenter the camp."

The Day of Atonement

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
29"This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work--whether native-born or a foreigner residing among you--29“And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you.29"This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not do any work, whether the native, or the alien who sojourns among you;29And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:29This is to be a permanent statute for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month you are to practice self-denial and do no work, both the native and the foreigner who resides among you.
30because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the LORD, you will be clean from all your sins.30For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the LORD from all your sins.30for it is on this day that atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD.30For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.30Atonement will be made for you on this day to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
31It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance.31It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it is a statute forever.31"It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a permanent statute.31It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.31It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must practice self-denial; it is a permanent statute.
32The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments32And the priest who is anointed and consecrated as priest in his father’s place shall make atonement, wearing the holy linen garments.32"So the priest who is anointed and ordained to serve as priest in his father's place shall make atonement: he shall thus put on the linen garments, the holy garments,32And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:32The priest who is anointed and ordained to serve as high priest in place of his father will make atonement. He will put on the linen garments, the holy garments,

33and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community.33He shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.33and make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.33And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.33and purify the most holy place. He will purify the tent of meeting and the altar and will make atonement for the priests and all the people of the assembly.
34"This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites." And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.34And this shall be a statute forever for you, that atonement may be made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins.” And Aaron did as the LORD commanded Moses.34"Now you shall have this as a permanent statute, to make atonement for the sons of Israel for all their sins once every year." And just as the LORD had commanded Moses, so he did.34And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.34This is to be a permanent statute for you, to make atonement for the Israelites once a year because of all their sins." And all this was done as the LORD commanded Moses.
