1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples:1Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,1Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples:
2"The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.2“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat,2saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:2"The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.
3So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.3so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.3therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.3Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don't do what they do, because they don't practice what they teach.
4They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.4They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.4"They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.4For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.4They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people's shoulders, but they themselves aren't willing to lift a finger to move them.

5"Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long;5They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,5"But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.5But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,5They do everything to be observed by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
6they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;6and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues6"They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,6And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,6They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,
7they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called 'Rabbi' by others.7and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.7and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.7greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi by people.
8"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.8But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.8"But do not be called Rabbi; for One is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.8"But as for you, do not be called 'Rabbi,' because you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers.
9And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.9And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.9"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.9Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.

10Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah.10Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.10"Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ.10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.10And do not be called masters either, because you have one Master, the Messiah.
11The greatest among you will be your servant.11The greatest among you shall be your servant.11"But the greatest among you shall be your servant.11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.11The greatest among you will be your servant.
12For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.12"Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.13"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.13"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You lock up the kingdom of heaven from people. For you don't go in, and you don't allow those entering to go in.
141414"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.14"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and make long prayers just for show. This is why you will receive a harsher punishment.

15"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.15"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.15"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as fit for hell as you are!
16"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.'16“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’16"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.'16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!16"Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whoever takes an oath by the sanctuary, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by his oath.'
17You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?17"You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold?17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?17Blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that sanctified the gold?
18You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.'18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’18"And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.'18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.18Also, Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.'
19You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?19"You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering?19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?19Blind people! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

20Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.20"Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it.20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.20Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it.
21And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.21"And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it.21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.21The one who takes an oath by the sanctuary takes an oath by it and by Him who dwells in it.
22And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.22And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.22"And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.22And the one who takes an oath by heaven takes an oath by God's throne and by Him who sits on it.
23"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.23"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.23"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy, and faith. These things should have been done without neglecting the others.
24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!24"You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.24Blind guides! You strain out a gnat, yet gulp down a camel!

25"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.25"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.25"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence!
26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.26"You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also.26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so the outside of it may also become clean.
27"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.27"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.27"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men's bones and every impurity.
28In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.28So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.28"So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.28In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,29"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,29"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

30And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'30saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’30and say, 'If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.30and you say, If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn't have taken part with them in shedding the prophets' blood.'
31So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.31"So you testify against yourselves, that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.31You, therefore, testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
32Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.32"Fill up, then, the measure of the guilt of your fathers.32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' sins!
33"You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?33You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?33"You serpents, you brood of vipers, how will you escape the sentence of hell?33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?33"Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?
34Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town.34Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,34"Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city,34Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:34This is why I am sending you prophets, sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and hound from town to town.

35And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.35so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.35So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
36Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.36Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.36"Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.36I assure you: All these things will come on this generation!

37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem! She who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, yet you were not willing!
38Look, your house is left to you desolate.38See, your house is left to you desolate.38"Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.38See, your house is left to you desolate.
39For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"39For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”39"For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you say, 'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'"39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.39For I tell you, you will never see Me again until you say, He who comes in the name of the Lord is the blessed One'!"
