After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, the musicians and the Levites were appointed.1Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed,1Now when the wall was rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,1Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,1When the wall had been rebuilt and I had the doors installed, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.2I gave my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was a more faithful and God-fearing man than many.2then I put Hanani my brother, and Hananiah the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many.2That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.2Then I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah, commander of the fortress, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.
I said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses."3And I said to them, “Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot. And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, some at their guard posts and some in front of their own homes.”3Then I said to them, "Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, let them shut and bolt the doors. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house."3And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.3I said to them, "Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes."

Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.4The city was wide and large, but the people within it were few, and no houses had been rebuilt.4Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not built.4Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.4The city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and no houses had been built yet.
So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:5Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles and the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and I found written in it:5Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the people to be enrolled by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first in which I found the following record:5And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,5Then my God put it into my mind to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by genealogy. I found the genealogical record of those who came back first, and I found the following written in it:

These searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.64These sought their registration among those enrolled in the genealogies, but it was not found there, so they were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.64These searched among their ancestral registration, but it could not be located; therefore they were considered unclean and excluded from the priesthood.64These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.64These searched for their entries in the genealogical records, but they could not be found, so they were disqualified from the priesthood.
The governor, therefore, ordered them not to eat any of the most sacred food until there should be a priest ministering with the Urim and Thummim.65The governor told them that they were not to partake of the most holy food until a priest with Urim and Thummim should arise.65The governor said to them that they should not eat from the most holy things until a priest arose with Urim and Thummim.65And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.65The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.
