Reuben and Gad Ask for Gilead

(Deuteronomy 3:12-22)

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock.1Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.1Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had an exceedingly large number of livestock. So when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that it was indeed a place suitable for livestock,1Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;1The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a good one for livestock.
So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said,2So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation,2the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation, saying,2The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,2So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community and said: "
"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon--3“Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,3"Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,3Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,3The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock.4the land that the LORD struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.”4the land which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock."4Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:4which the LORD struck down before the community of Israel, is good land for livestock, and your servants own livestock."
If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan."5And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”5They said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession; do not take us across the Jordan."5Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.5They said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don't make us cross the Jordan."

Moses Reproves Reuben and Gad

NIVESVNASBKJVHCSB
Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here?6But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here?6But Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, "Shall your brothers go to war while you yourselves sit here?6And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?6But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, "Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?
Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the LORD has given them?7Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them?7"Now why are you discouraging the sons of Israel from crossing over into the land which the LORD has given them?7And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them?7Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the LORD has given them?
This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.8Your fathers did this, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.8"This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.8Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadeshbarnea to see the land.8That's what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.
After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.9For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the LORD had given them.9"For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the sons of Israel so that they did not go into the land which the LORD had given them.9For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them.9After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.

The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:10And the LORD’s anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying,10"So the LORD'S anger burned in that day, and He swore, saying,10And the LORD'S anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,10So the LORD's anger burned that day, and He swore an oath:
Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--11‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me,11'None of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob; for they did not follow Me fully,11Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:11Because they did not follow Me completely, none of the men 20 years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--
not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.'12none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have wholly followed the LORD.’12except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for they have followed the LORD fully.'12Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD.12none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did follow the LORD completely.'
The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.13And the LORD’s anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD was gone.13"So the LORD'S anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the entire generation of those who had done evil in the sight of the LORD was destroyed.13And the LORD'S anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed.13The LORD's anger burned against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness 40 years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the LORD's sight was gone.
"And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel.14And behold, you have risen in your fathers’ place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the LORD against Israel!14"Now behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the LORD against Israel.14And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel.14And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your fathers' place adding even more to the LORD's burning anger against Israel.
If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction."15For if you turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”15"For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people."15For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.15If you turn back from following Him, He will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them."

Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children.16Then they came near to him and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,16Then they came near to him and said, "We will build here sheepfolds for our livestock and cities for our little ones;16And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:16Then they approached him and said, "We want to build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our dependents.
But we will arm ourselves for battle and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.17but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.17but we ourselves will be armed ready to go before the sons of Israel, until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.17But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.17But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.18We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance.18"We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has possessed his inheritance.18We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.18We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has taken possession of his inheritance.
We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan."19For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.”19"For we will not have an inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has fallen to us on this side of the Jordan toward the east."19For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.19Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance will be across the Jordan to the east."

Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle20So Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the LORD for the war,20So Moses said to them, "If you will do this, if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for the war,20And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war,20Moses replied to them, "If you do this--if you arm yourselves for battle before the LORD,
and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him--21and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the LORD, until he has driven out his enemies from before him21and all of you armed men cross over the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven His enemies out from before Him,21And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,21and every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the LORD until He has driven His enemies from His presence,
then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD.22and the land is subdued before the LORD; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.22and the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you shall return and be free of obligation toward the LORD and toward Israel, and this land shall be yours for a possession before the LORD.22And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.22and the land is subdued before the LORD--afterward you may return and be free from obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
"But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.23But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.23"But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out.23But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out.23But if you don't do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD; be sure your sin will catch up with you.
Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised."24Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.”24"Build yourselves cities for your little ones, and sheepfolds for your sheep, and do what you have promised."24Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.24Build cities for your dependents and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised."

The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands.25And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.25The sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands.25And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.25The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands.
Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.26Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead,26"Our little ones, our wives, our livestock and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead;26Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:26Our little children, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead,
But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says."27but your servants will pass over, every man who is armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord orders.”27while your servants, everyone who is armed for war, will cross over in the presence of the LORD to battle, just as my lord says."27But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith.27but your servants are equipped for war before the LORD and will go across to the battle as my lord orders."
Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.28So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.28So Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers' households of the tribes of the sons of Israel.28So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:28So Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the family leaders of the Israelite tribes.
He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.29And Moses said to them, “If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the LORD, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession.29Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross with you over the Jordan in the presence of the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession;29And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:29Moses told them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the LORD, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.

But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan."30However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.”30but if they will not cross over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan."30But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.30But if they don't go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you."
The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said.31And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the LORD has said to your servants, we will do.31The sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, "As the LORD has said to your servants, so we will do.31And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.31The Gadites and Reubenites replied, "What the LORD has spoken to your servants is what we will do.
We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan."32We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”32"We ourselves will cross over armed in the presence of the LORD into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us across the Jordan."32We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.32We will cross over in battle formation before the LORD into the land of Canaan, but we will keep our hereditary possession across the Jordan."

Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.33And Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country.33So Moses gave to them, to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og, the king of Bashan, the land with its cities with their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.33And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.33So Moses gave them--the Gadites, Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph--the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land including its cities with the territories surrounding them.
The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,34And the people of Gad built Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,34The sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer,34And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,34The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,35and Atroth-shophan and Jazer and Jogbehah,35And Atroth, Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,35Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.36Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified cities, and folds for sheep.36and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and sheepfolds for sheep.36And Bethnimrah, and Bethharan, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.36Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and built sheepfolds.

And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim,37And the people of Reuben built Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,37The sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim,37And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kirjathaim,37The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.38Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built.38and Nebo and Baal-meon-- their names being changed-- and Sibmah, and they gave other names to the cities which they built.38And Nebo, and Baalmeon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.38as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there.39And the sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.39The sons of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and took it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.39And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.39The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.40And Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it.40So Moses gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.40And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.40So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled in it.
Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.41Jair the son of Manasseh went and took its towns, and called them Havvoth-jair.41And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havothjair.41Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages, which he renamed Jair's Villages.
And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.42And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.42Nobah went and took Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah after his own name.42And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.42Nobah went and captured Kenath with its villages and called it Nobah after his own name.
